Trenton, NJ ( PBN)- On Saturday, June 1, 2024, at approximately 4:30 a.m., Trenton Emergency Medical Services (TEMS) were dispatched to the 800 block of S. Clinton Ave. for a report of a person down on the street. Initially believed to be a cardiac arrest, TEMS arrived to find an unresponsive, unidentified female. She was transported to Capital Health Regional Medical Center.

At approximately 8:12 a.m., Trenton Communications received a call from a nurse at Capital Health Regional Medical Center requesting an officer to respond for a patient who arrived with traumatic injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle. The victim, who sustained multiple fractures and other serious injuries, was identified as 26-year-old Shydasia Merrick of Trenton.

Detective Vincent Gribbin of the Trenton Police Department’s Fatal Crash Unit was contacted to lead the investigation. Upon learning the victim was brought in from the 800 block of S. Clinton Ave., officers responded to the area and located debris indicative of a motor vehicle crash. However, no vehicles in the immediate vicinity had damage consistent with a hit-and-run incident.

Detective Gribbin arrived at the hospital only to be informed that the victim had just been pronounced dead after suffering from cardiac arrest.

The investigation into this confirmed fatal hit-and-run is ongoing, with assistance from the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office Serious Collision Response Team.
